Many things make me think of what Autism is and who Autism effects. The other day I was asked what the purpose the Lord had in having people who suffered with this interesting, dynamic and at many times frustrating syndrome. There is no doubt in my mind that it can be painful to see anyone with a disability being ridiculed or frustrated or hurting. Not just painful but angry. I can become rather angry with the ignorance of someone who has never had to deal with a disability but so easily can reach out and harm someone with a disability. And I say harm because that is what they are doing. Anyway---my point to this is NOT to get onto those who are ignorant---because in due time their reward will be given to them--not by me but one who is greater than me. My point is to look at the purpose to those who live each day with autism. #1 in my book is my students with Autism bring me joy everyday! From the child who only repeats what I say---to another child who LOVES to experiment with the english language. From all the great words that we have and the multiple ways that you can phonetically spell them to the really bad ones. To the one child who is so consumed with their schedule that you want to make sure that any disruption can be calmed or prepared for. To the child that another teacher may have that has so much frustration because they may not be able to communicate simple needs. What is the purpose of these special souls? The ones that walk on this earth with the hand of God with them. The purpose of these children is to teach us so many things. These lessons are innumerable. Patience, love, kindness, compassion, patience--oh did I say that one twice, joy, happiness, surprise, laughter, hard work like you've never seen, joy--oh did I say this one twice too, love---all of these over and over and over again. And it's not with just Autism, it's with anyone with any kind of disability. Life is not easy for these children who grow into adults. Life is not handed to them and they may not ever be able to be let go completely and fly on their own. To see the progress that is made and see what they are able to accomplish is amazing---Parents see it, teachers see it and their peers see it. How important would it be for you as a parent to see your child who may not have a disability learn to work with, be a protector of, be a supporter to, and be a friend to someone who may have a disability? Do you realize the life lessons of love, compassion, loyalty and so many other things they could have? Children can be very cruel--- But children can be WONDERFUL and KIND and be a defender to those who struggle. As much as I love to work with those who need extra help, I LOVE to see their peers reach out and take a hand, tie a shoe, look over and say---oh you skipped this one, or to just retell directions. The Lord knew what we needed. This life is hard, this life is an uphill race.... but from those who have run a marathon, I don't think I've ever heard them say I wish I didn't do it. I know I will see these precious souls on the other side and I will be able to see them as who they are without their bodies hindered by their disability. The disability that they carried to teach me to be kinder, more patient, in all a better person. So I repeat the question---Why are they here??? They are here for US!!!! All of us! It's up to you to take advantage of it!!!!
